“I hope you will excuse my interference…”: Surveillance and control in the Stirling District Asylum Archive
Free exhibition open to the general public
Archives area, Level 2, University of Stirling Library
Stirling District Asylum was established in 1865. The first patients were admitted in June 1869, many being transferred from asylums in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. Located in Larbert the institution was renamed Bellsdyke Hospital in 1960. The historical records of the asylum were transferred to the University of Stirling Archives in April 2012. The registers, patient case books and administrative papers of the institution provide a detailed record of the care and treatment of its patients.
Further information on the archive can be found here.
The exhibition is part of the event series celebrating the hosting of the Winston Smith Library of Victory and Truth exhibition by Hans K Clausen at the University of Stirling – a collaboration between the University's Management School and its Art Collection with the support of the Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance, and Privacy (CRISP). The archives exhibition, in line with themes of the book 1984, explore ideas of records and citizen-state relations.
