Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming deeply integrated in many sociotechnical systems, influencing decisions in fields ranging from healthcare to employment. However, despite its potential for innovation, AI often inherits and amplifies existing social biases, leading to the exclusion of marginalized groups – as well as creating new forms of discrimination. This talk delves into the intersection of AI, diversity, and exclusion, focusing on how these technologies can perpetuate discriminatory practices under the guise of neutrality or efficiency. Drawing from insights gained through the BIAS-project, Prof. Søraa will illustrate how exclusionary practices manifest in AI systems and the implications for society. He will also explore strategies for mitigating these biases, ensuring that AI technologies foster inclusivity rather than reinforce inequality. Engaging with interdisciplinary perspectives, this presentation will challenge the assumption that AI is inherently neutral and advocate for a more reflexive approach to its development, by prioritizing diversity and fairness at every stage of the process.
