CRISP conference round up

It's been a busy month

CRISP researchers have been out and about at conferences this last month. Now we have unpacked our suitcases here is a quick round up of what we have been up to.

May 19 - 22 saw our involvement in Computers, Privacy and Data Protection. CRISP is a partner of the conference and always provides a panel. Edinburgh CRISP director Charles Raab is on the conference's Scientific Advisory Board. This year, the CRISP panel, on Data Protection and Digital Monitoring in the Workplace, was the inaugural Rosamunde Van Brakel panel. This panel promotes social science perspectives on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection.

Well attended, it introduced CPDP delegates to digital work monitoring, its risks and its regulation:

  • Davide Villani from the Joint Research Centre set out the extent of monitoring in EUrope

  • Emmanuelle Brun from EU-OSHA discussed its health and safety concerns

  • Kirstie Ball from CRISP-St Andrews presented current knowledge about monitoring and its regulation

  • Cristina Vanini Goodchild from CVG Solutions discussed the practical implications

The panel was expertly moderated by ex CRISP director William Webster

June 9 - 12 saw many CRISP researchers' involvement in the fabulous Surveillance Studies Network Biannual Conference, this time in the equally fabulous Lille, expertly hosted by the ETHICS research center. CRISP researchers were active in the conference, on panels:

And on papers:

  • Pete Fussey and Daragh Murray gave a paper entitled  'Facial Recognition Surveillance: Compound Human Rights Harm and Reconfigurations of Suspicion'

And Kirstie Ball was the keynote speaker.

Have a good summer everyone!
